The Storm by Samantha Towle

Jake Wethers’s life is perfect. He’s married to the woman he’s always loved, and they have three beautiful children. The Mighty Storm is still going strong, and his record label is thriving. Jake has everything—a life he thought he would never have and one that he didn’t think he deserved. Not so long ago, Jake’s life wasn’t perfect. The unexpected and untimely death of his best friend, Jonny Creed, sent an already out-of-control Jake spiraling down further. Drug addiction. Alcohol. Women. Jake was in the fast lane to following Jonny to the grave until Tru Bennett walked back into his life and changed everything.

This read didn't disappoint. The love story between Jake and Tru has been one of my favorites since first reading The Mighty Storm. Getting a glimpse into their life as a married couple slash mom and dad was fun.  The glimpse into Jonny's last minutes got me teary for the first time in a very long time in my lately jaded love affair with books. And since I don't want to give spoilers, I won't say what I loved the most, but I agree with the author who sums things up with, the Storm Series still had an unfinished story that needed to live on.

Although I did read it in one sitting--it's short, a novelette--I found maybe I've outgrown the too perfect characters. I don't mean perfect as in they can do no wrong because we all know Jake's imperfect past. The perfect I don't like so much any longer is the male POV too often yapping up the heroine on a pedestal in internal dialogue. The 'Tru is beautiful' 'Everyone loves True' and in Jake Whether's fucktastic world, Tru is the fucking most perfect creature who ever walked the fuckin' earth--all of the time. No. Doesn't happen in real life and sometimes I want a dose of reality. I want the rock star who slaps his wife on the ass as she climbs the staircase ahead of him and when she turns, he gives her the dirty boy grin as if he were horny and not mad. Hopefully, you know the book, because it's one of the best rock star series out there--my second all time favorite!
